OVERVIEW: For more than 50 years, Nassau Suffolk Law Services (NSLS) has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel, featuring interdisciplinary teams, in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake including: eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, education, consumer fraud and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. NSLS has a staff of over 100 employees situated in three offices across Long Island.
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Social Worker will work as part of an interdisciplinary team. Supervision will be provided by the Director of Social Work as well as the Supervising Attorney. The duties of the Social Worker shall include: assisting clients in extreme emotional crisis; assisting vulnerable clients, including those facing homelessness, loss of income and/or lack of food, and those who cannot navigate necessary systems alone; providing resources and referrals; informal advocacy; community education where feasible and appropriate; supervision of undergraduate and/or graduate interns; working with community agencies; short-term supportive counseling; conducting home visits when appropriate and necessary; conducting interviews and initial assessments of clients’ needs; and performing necessary administrative tasks.
REQUIREMENTS: An M.S.W. degree from an accredited school of social work. New York State License must be either current or candidate must be willing to acquire. Must have completed, or be willing to complete, Seminar in Field Instruction. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and English preferred. A strong interest in advocacy is important. Experience working with persons facing homelessness will be viewed favorably.
START DATE: Immediate
SALARY: DOE, union scale with excellent benefits
