January 10, 2024On December 13th, 2023, New York State Governor Hochul signed legislation to protect New York consumers from ongoing financial consequences related to medical debt. Effective immediately, hospitals, health care professionals, and ambulances cannot report medical debt to credit agencies. If you have medical debt (incurred in New York State) on your credit report and it has not been removed, you can dispute the debt with the three credit bureaus. The Federal Trade Commission provides step-by-step instructions for disputing errors on your credit report.
