OVERVIEW: For more than 60 years, Legal Services of Long Island has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake, including eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud, and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. Legal Services of Long Island has a staff of over one hundred people situated in three offices across Long Island.
OFFICE LOCATION: Nassau County (Hempstead Office).
JOB DESCRIPTION: LSLI is seeking an attorney for the Hempstead office’s Public Benefits Unit, which provides legal advice and representation in matters related to income maintenance issues, including but not limited to Public Assistance, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Unemployment Insurance, and the administrative process of modifying child support obligations with DSS. The attorney will be handling matters from intake and informal advocacy through administrative hearings, trials, and appeals, as necessitated by the individual case. Participation in community legal education is also expected. Demonstrated commitment to the needs of the underserved population and the goals of Legal Services is required. Both admitted attorneys and recent law graduates, if eligible to practice under our Student Practice Order, will be considered.
START DATE: Immediate. SALARY: $80,000-$102,561 BENEFITS: Medical, Dental, Life Insurance, Long Term Disability (100% of the premium covered by employer), 403b with defined contribution and Student Loan Reimbursement (amount subject to collective beginning agreement), eligible after 1 year anniversary.
REQUIREMENTS: Admission to the New York State Bar. Applicants who have passed the State Bar Examination and are pending admission will also be considered. Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may be considered. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program.
