OVERVIEW: For more than 60 years, Legal Services of Long Island has been providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters when basic human needs are at stake, including eviction and foreclosure prevention, income maintenance, disability, elder law, healthcare, consumer fraud, and more. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services on Long Island, our services support thousands of poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has equal access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. Legal Services of Long Island has a staff of over one hundred people situated in three offices across Long Island.
OFFICE LOCATION: Nassau County (Hempstead Office)
DUTIES: To staff a project providing a wide variety of legal services, including but not limited to public benefits, housing, family law, employment law, debtor/creditor law, and civil post-conviction relief, to low-income clients who have previously been incarcerated. The purpose of the unit is to provide comprehensive services which, working with other relevant service providers and self-advocacy organizations, will assist our clients to re-enter society as equal members, to maintain housing and employment, and to re-establish family ties and responsibilities on a sustainable basis.
Duties will include all phases of representation from intake, advice and counsel, informal advocacy through direct representation, and appeal before courts and administrative agencies, as well as contact with parole and probation offices when necessary. Some community legal education is also expected.
START DATE: Immediate. SALARY: $80,000-$102,561 BENEFITS: Medical, Dental, Life Insurance, Long Term Disability (100% of the premium covered by employer), 403b with defined contribution and Student Loan Reimbursement (amount subject to collective beginning agreement), eligible after 1 year anniversary.
REQUIREMENTS: Admission to the New York State Bar. Applicants who have passed the State Bar Examination and are pending admission will also be considered. Applicants who have taken the exam and are waiting to hear the results may be considered. Demonstrated commitment to the goals and clients of the legal services program.
