September 11, 2024Margarett M. Williams, Esq. is both a practicing attorney and Director of Employer Relations at Touro Law Center. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Adelphi University, where she graduated summa cum laude, and her Juris Doctor from Touro Law Center.
Ms. Williams has been representing indigent clients for approximately 17 years. She has also served as a mentor to new matrimonial and family law attorneys. She initially practiced employment law upon graduation from law school, but quickly pursued her interest in family law. She practiced matrimonial and family law at Winkler, Kurtz, LLP, a Port Jefferson Station law firm that received the highest ratings in the well-respected Martindale Hubbell listing of attorneys and law firms.
Ms. Williams is admitted to practice law in the State of New York, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.
When Ms. Williams was asked why she does this volunteer work, she states, “I have been performing pro bono work for the last 17 years. Most of the cases are relatively simple, but I enjoy the difficult ones because they are intellectually challenging. In cases where I am representing a wife in a divorce, sometimes I can provide them with a path to a better future. For example, when wives have been homemakers or are under employed, I ask them to go on-line and research certificate programs that will allow them to earn a good living so they will not aways be dependent upon others. In one case I was able to get a client’s husband to pay for the training. My pro bono work allows me to positively change lives.”
Ms. Williams is being recognized for her exceptional pro bono work in 2023 and 2024, particularly for her efforts in helping many low-income women on Long Island finalize their divorces.
Congratulations to Margarett Williams on being recognized this month as the Pro Bono Lawyer of the month by the Suffolk County Bar Association!
