April 28, 2020COVID-19: FAQ for Guardians and Others
April 29, 2020The IRS has announced a May 5 deadline for people who receive SSI or VA benefits and have dependents under the age of 17 to register for their full economic impact payment. People who received these benefits in 2018 or 2019 will automatically receive a $1200 CARES Act Economic Impact Payment (stimulus). However, if they have young dependents and did not file 2018 or 2019 taxes claiming these dependents, they MUST register with the IRS by May 5. Anyone who first started receiving benefits in 2020 should also register with the IRS unless they filed a tax return for 2018 or 2019.
Visit the IRS web portal for non-filers to register. The IRS portal is available in Spanish, but there is still no alternative for people who do not have internet access.
People who received SSD or other Social Security Benefits will begin receiving their economic impact payments this week in the same manner that they receive their regular benefit payments. If they missed the April 22 deadline to register their dependents, they will have to file a 2020 tax return to get the $500 stimulus payment for each dependent.
