Beware of Payday Loans
July 28, 2025Scammers are out and about trying to trick veterans into paying them money. If you or a veteran you know has received a letter or phone call stating there is an overpayment, do not make any payments or share any personal information (such as VA login credentials or password) with anyone who calls. If you do owe money, you can check your VA.gov account or call the VA’s debt management center at 1-800-827-0648. The VA does offer repayment help for free. To learn more, visit the Federal Trade Commission website.
LSLI’s Veterans Rights Project provides legal assistance to low-income United States military veterans. Legal services include assistance with various issues including veteran’s benefits and appeals, discharge upgrades, public benefits, landlord-tenant matters, consumer debt issues, select social security appeals, and family law matters. The family law matter assistance provided focuses on child support and excludes divorces, custody, and visitation. The Veterans Rights Project staff participate in community outreach such as tabling at VA Stand Downs and Job Assistance Fairs and at Veterans legal advice clinics. Suffolk residents can call 631-232-2400. Nassau residents can call 516-292-8100.
