Nassau Suffolk Law Services stands in solidarity with our community as we mourn the death of George Floyd and countless others unjustly killed before and since. “If we are to keep our democracy, there must be one commandment: Thou shall not ration justice.” (Judge Learned Hand, “Thou Shall Not Ration Justice” (1951)). This week America calls out for justice as never before.
While this week’s demonstrations were sparked by police brutality, they are fueled by pain and anger over persistent inequality and injustice communities of color face every day. “We are all in this together” has been a popular slogan as we face COVID-19. But, inequality has only been heightened during the pandemic as Black and Brown communities bear the brunt of the health and economic fallout.
Racial justice starts with freedom from being killed by people in positions of power, but this is not enough. Black and Brown communities must also have meaningful access to all aspects of the justice system. At Nassau Suffolk Law Services, we are committed to racial justice as we help people in need vindicate their rights under the law.
In response to the events of the last week, we will examine our own work and actions and rededicate ourselves to promoting equity and inclusion within our organization and for our community.
