March 5, 2021The moratorium on utility disconnections ends on March 31, 2021.
Since June 2020, there has been a moratorium in place on any residential utility disconnections during the Covid-19 state of emergency. However, the law that created the moratorium is scheduled to sunset at the end of March. That means that utility companies can start to disconnect services as soon as next month.
Customers who experienced a change in financial circumstances as a result of COVID may be protected for another 180 days, but they must call their utility before March 31 to report their hardship. Utilities are also required to offer deferred payment agreements to these customers with no money down or penalties.More information about the moratorium is available from the NY Department of Public Service.
