Increased Protection for Wage Garnishment and Frozen Bank Accounts as of 2017
January 10, 2017With the increase of the minimum wage in NYS on December 31, 2016, the protection amounts for wage garnishment and frozen bank accounts also increased.
Long Island Minimum wage increased to $10/hr (NYC and other parts of NY are different minimum wages)Therefore, the protected amount for bank accounts (without exempt income/deposits such as SSD, child support, etc) is $2400 (240 x $10). CPLR 5222 (i).
The minimum one can earn per week without having their wages garnished is $300 (after taxes) (30 x $10). CPLR 5231.
