Medicare Special Enrollment for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals

Medicare Special Enrollment for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals (Incarceration (SEP) – Effective January 1, 2023, individuals leaving custody have an opportunity to enroll in Medicare without late enrollment penalties. Under the Incarceration SEP, individuals leaving custody have a 12-month period in which to enroll or re-enroll in Medicare and can do so without being subject to a late enrollment penalty.  For more information, please see Justice in Aging’s Issue Brief.
